Housing trust takes software line on crime-busting

IT Service Management software firm House-on-the-Hill is helping crack down on trouble on Manchester estates by giving the local housing trust an extra weapon in its campaign against crime and anti-social behaviour.

Willow Park Housing Trust, a registered social landlord which owns and manages nearly 8,000 homes in the regenerated area of East Wythenshawe, mainly uses House-on-the-Hill’s SupportDesk product to manage its IT help desk and computer infrastructure. But the tool is also proving a major boon in the fight against crime and disorder.

Nine neighbourhood wardens, who are among 300 people employed by the Trust, log incidents on SupportDesk. These are then analysed to highlight problem areas or individuals.

The wardens work with the police to cut crime and disorder on the estates and do a good job of making sure nearly all the area is peaceful, explained Christine Billington, Head of ICT at Willow Park Housing Trust. But House-on-the-Hill’s software, which replaced a paper system, is very useful in highlighting hot spots. It is helping East Wythenshawe become an even safer place for residents and visitors.

Established in 1999, Willow Park has invested over 140m in improvements to services, the environment and homes.The wardens receive some 350 calls a month which can be categorised under 60 different headings within SupportDesk. Allan Hart, the Trust’s Wardens Manager, said the software reports were an important focus for fortnightly meetings with police, the Council, youth workers and others in the local Crime and Disorder Partnership.

He added: The system helps us in reporting incidents to the police as well as to take positive preventative action, including stopping some individuals from becoming persistent offenders by identifying them early on. The wardens are the eyes and ears of the local community and this tool is extremely valuable for them. It is a wonderful piece of equipment.
